THE CITY & THE HEART PRESENT A BENEFIT FOR SAFE HORIZON WOMENS SHELTERS

Rock fans love their music. They also love the ‘anything worth doing is worth overdoing’ party lifestyle that comes with rock and roll. I know I certainly do! It’s a chance to engage in shenanigans and take few things in life seriously. It’s always great however when those who love diving into the play hard/play hard life to step back and use their abilities and love for music to give back and help out a cause that isn’t as fun to talk about the side of music we all love.

New York rocker Meghann Wright is helping put together a concert this Saturday in hopes of gaining traction for The City & the Heart, an organization that raises money for womens shelters here in New York City. Meghann is also one of the headliners of the evening, which will showcase an array of local female artists including Lauren Diamond, Lindsay Dunphy, Breanna, Elli Espi, and Mary Mettias (of Vine Leaf). The event, which is taking place at The Bitter End, will see its proceeds going towards the shelters Meghann helped pick out herself.

I sat down with Meghann this weekend to talk about what drives her to work for causes like this and what she really hopes music fans like her can take away from it.

“Originally when I was looking around for womens shelters that would be good to donate money to, I was trying to decide if I wanted to pick one that was really struggling, or donate to one that’s been going above and beyond with helping people out. I decided on Safe Horizon, mostly because they don’t turn anyone away. They help not only women, but also struggling children, LGBT, transgender teens, even men who have been victimized by abuse. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s certainly a sobering topic, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a great fucking show!”

Meghann is no stranger to the music industry, as she’s been performing in different bands in New York and L.A. for a handful of years now. She’s also no stranger to helping put on events like these. She helped start The City & the Heart a little over a year ago and since then she’s helped put together 14 showcases like this.

“This is the first one we’ve been able to put on in a while actually. Things just got very busy and overwhelming with all that we were doing, on top of my career starting to pick up. We were doing releases, video shoots, and all that fun stuff, plus my day job. So it’s great we’re able to get one going here at the end of summer, they’re always a lot of fun to be a part of. ”

Anyone who knows me knows there’s nothing I find more awesome or hotter for that matter than when a girl gets on stage and can hold her own and rock with anyone else up there. It’s great to see some women here in the New York music scene put their skills and fan bases together to help a good cause, and Meghann was 100% right in saying it’s going to be a great fucking show as well.

Be sure to attend the show on August 23rd at the Bitter End to support this great cause!
