Having interviewed J.P. from herMajesty last week, I was excited to catch their show at Rockwood Hall on a foggy 4-20. I met up with the band before their gig and talked about where everyone was from, including locales such as Greece, Baltimore, and Bar Harbor (Bah-Habah), Maine. The whole band was eager to play stage 2 next door, but there were no evident nerves and took a few photos.
Once they were on the red-saturated Rockwood stage, herMajesty tore into their 10 song set with a fervor starting with “My Body Your Mind.” Fashion Trance, their newest single which has been very popular on the alternative lists followed, and sounded magnificent.
herMajesty immerses themselves into each song fully, which in turn creates a dynamic sound highlighted by sizzling guitar work and J.P’s distinct vocals. Add in the perfectly timed keyboards, bass and percussion and it becomes a monster sound which can fill any room, small or large. Most lead singers take the stage and try make it their own, J.P. on the other hand, makes it his home and for the 45 minutes he made eye contact with everyone while sauntering, jumping, pointing and deliriously singing his intricate vocals. There is no pretense in his movements, they are natural and coming from within, it’s not something he can control as the music takes over and creates a dynamic front-man.
What’s the saying, when your having fun, time flies – right? This was certainly the case with herMajesty’s set, despite rocking completely and thoroughly for nearly an hour, the show came to a close all to quick and left me wanting more. That is the sign of a great band and if your lucky enough you’ll catch this fast-rising act before they start playing much bigger stages.
