PHASES PLAY THE STUDIO AT WEBSTER HALL

Electro-synth pop band PHASES is a mixture of two 80s pop powerhouses, Madonna and Blondie. Singer Z Berg is Madonna minus the weird and Debbie Harry minus the punk attitude; but looks and sounds just as amazing as both. That might be a problem if the band wasn’t any good, but to their benefit, they are! Their revamped version of Madonna-esque 80s synth pop music along with Z Berg’s powerful and singing style makes for a crafty way of bringing back great dance music into 2015. With a lot of retro styles of electro-pop making a comeback amongst the festival and touring circuit these days, it’s nice to see a band come out and do it with some new tricks and not necessarily recycled habits.

It wasn’t a flawless performance however, as Z Berg may have had some technical difficulties throughout her set. The stylish and beautiful front woman kept bringing too much attention to her ear monitors due to too much reverb and not enough click track volume. Rather than keep playing with your ear and mouthing “What The Fuck?!” to the sound booth throughout the show, she would’ve been better off for the sake of the performance, to just rip them out and play with your band.

Technical difficulties aside, the band’s energetic style kept the venue dancing throughout the majority of their set. As they rocked their way through hot singles “I’m In Love With My Life,” the first single off their upcoming album, “Cooler,” and “Betty Blue,” the band also introduced a few new jams including “New Illusion.”
