There’s something striking about watching Balthazar perform a song like “Nightclub” in the daytime. It’s also a song that has been secretly begging for an acoustic version since the release of Thin Walls. In this special CMJ Whiskey Session, soft snaps and hand drums fill out the rhythm of its lusty swing, and Maarten Devoldere’s voice resonates deep as a well.
Thanks to the alluringly stripped-down video from Standard Productions, there’s warmth in the way they tap their leather boots and chime in together on the dusky chorus. There are even some hidden glimpses of them wandering the city; Gibson guitars slung over their backs, looking as cool as the faded fall weather. Not that being supremely cool is anything new for Balthazar.
