36 hours before Election Day, non-partisan HeadCount, with the Capitol Theater’s Peter Shapiro presented Jam the Vote.
The evening started with Matisyahu, joined onstage by Soulive’s Eric Kranso, Marc Brownstein of the Disco Biscuits, DJ Logic and more to cover Bob Marley’s “Crazy Baldhead.”
Club owner/concert promoter Peter Shapiro then came out to encourage everyone to get out and vote. He wanted everyone to take out there phones and text a friend to remind him or her to pledge to vote on JamTheVote.org so they could stream the show live. He even texted an old school teacher while on stage before introducing the house band for the evening, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
The first of many brilliant musicians to join Preservation Hall Jazz Band for this New Orleans style jam session was Lee Fields. Other singers/musicians rotating throughout the night included Amy Helm, “Soul Queen of New Orleans” Irma Thomas, Ivan Neville, Nicole Atkins, Valerie June, Blind Boys of Alabama, the Meters’ George Porter, pedal steel legend Robert Randolph, Andy Falco of the Infamous Stringdusters, Antibalas lead singer Amayo, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz, Joe Russo + Tom Hamilton, Win Butler of Arcade Fire and Craig Finn of the Hold Steady. To end the evening all the guests joined the stage for a jammin’ version of “America the Beautiful.”
