After hearing that my favorite South Carolina band was heading to NYC for a one off gig at Pianos, I immediately spoke to the guys to get me on their list and being the cool dudes they are, hooked me up right away.
Arriving at Pianos early, as usual, I first caught American Wrestlers and their fantastic set of indie pop-rock. Little is known about this new band, and even their location seems to be somewhat of a secret, but indicators point towards Chicago. Their Facebook page doesn’t even give you much insight but the fact they only have 285 “followers,” is unbelievable to me. At any rate, this is a fantastic trio that had really tight and peppy songs that had people asking around me “who are these guys?” – in disbelief that they hadn’t heard of them before. The highlight of their 45 minute set was the super catchy “I Can Do No Wrong,” which you can watch in the video I took below. Be sure to keep your eyes open for these guys in the near future!
Heyrocco is one of those rare bands nowadays that has heavy riffs and explosive energy but crafts harmonious tunes that can be played on the radio (there’s still radio, right?). Self described as “Disney Grunge” the power trio aims to bring back the good old days of grunge but with a new millennium twist, and so far is succeeding. Having just spent a month in the UK, playing shows everywhere and recording some new tracks, you’d think a break was necessary or some more time in the studio – but this isn’t your average band and they made the 16 hour trip to NYC for a one off show in the LES.
Led by Nate on guitar/vocals and with Taco and Cool dropping the beats – the band is self-defacing and funny. With songs about premature ejaculation and ‘getting high with mom and finding Jesus’,” it’s easy to love the fun nature of the songs but what stands out is their impeccable timing and musicianship. Over all their set was entertaining and evolved from the last time I had seen them, which shows they are never satisfied with their last performance – a mark of the great ones. Check out their newest song in the video below and be sure to keep an ear out for more new tunes soon.
