BODY LANGUAGE’S MASTER CLASS IN FUNK AT BABY’S ALL RIGHT

“I had no idea this was going to happen!” lead singer Angelica Bess exclaimed, indicating the packed house at Baby’s All Right. I’m inclined to think the crowd was warranted. And despite some technical difficulties at first, Body Language kicked off what is sure to be a great tour last night, amid a sea of shimmying Brooklynites.

Body Language has been steadily gaining buzz and indie critical acclaim since arriving in Bedstuy a few years ago. Remixes and collaborations with artists like Passion Pit launched the quartet onto the peppy chillwave scene. With last year’s release of their sleek, disco infused LP Grammar, they are now poised to usher in a new movement of modern, funky, sexy pop.

Last night’s attendees were more than entertained; the back room quickly steamed up with hand claps, booty shaking, even a failed crowd surf. Highlights included “You Can,” “Just Because” and the intoxicating “Falling Out.” Their latest, “Really Love” is a bit more trappy but still chock full of the smooth synth and deep grooves Body Language is quickly becoming known for. Their west coast tour starts out in Portland, OR on February 16th and will include San Fran, Los Angeles and San Diego. A definite recommend.
