If there is a band who knows how to throw epic parties, it has to be High Waisted! Earlier this summer they had a boat cruise which was a smash hit and this past weekend they threw a Tiki-Party complete with roast sucking pig with all the fixins’! Held at Kings County Saloon, who’s infamous for it’s yearly “Smallest Penis Contest”, proved to be a fine choice for the pig-roast.
Not only was there all you can eat pig (supplied by Black Tree Restaurant), there were yummy ice cream sandwiches in three different flavors that Melt Bakery provided, a photo booth, and free tropical punch! People may of came for the delicious pig but they stayed for the music, which was in high form all afternoon.
Starting the days music was the surf-rock band known as The Mystery Lights, who’s singer had to take a spot on the floor as the stage at Kings County is small and could not hold his jumping and thrashing about. This band did not mess around and throttled the early crowd with it’s high-tempo surf grooves.
The middle slot of the day was owned by the hosts, High Waisted, who blew away the near capacity room with it’s hybrid surf-pop-rock tunes. This band is easy to fall in love with as their unique sound is endearing. Jessica Dye, who’s a perfect front-woman has a great and powerful voice that flows smoothly with her male bandmates perfect timing. The “Surf-Rock” genre is definitely heard in most of their songs, with rapid fire guitar work but their music is much more than that and shows glimpses of garage rock and 50’s inspired old fashioned rock n roll throughout their catalogue. Did I mention that this group is less than a year old? That is a fact that I am blown away by, and by judging on their early success, I expect big things from the Brooklyn group in the very near future. Check out this live video!
Around 5pm, everyone was feeling full with the ridiculously tender and moist pig, but when Las Rosas played their first notes the party was back on. The 3-piece band felt totally old-school to me, like an episode of Happy Days, complete with Fonzie jumping over a shark tank. It could of been the spiked punch drinks or the belly full of pork but the 50’s vibe is strong with this group. They had tons of hooks and the harmonies between the trio were really outstanding. While the band did their thing on-stage many folks got up and danced around with delirious smiles upon their faces.
All in all, this was a Sunday-Funday to the max and am already daydreaming about the next High Waisted party to come down the chute.
